The latest revision of the software/interface does not
seem to make it possible to find and ban people who do
this. I'm considering closing the group to new members
if some other solution can't be found.

Do they still allow the option of new members being placed on
"Moderated" status? That seems to be the best and most effective way of
keeping a group open, yet preventing spammers from taking over a group.

I'm the administrator of a YahooGroups list owned by a professional
organization, and new list members have to be members of the
organization. I get a couple of messages per week from random people,
most of whom are students vaguely interested in the field, and I just
send them a form letter explaining that the list is members only. It
doesn't take much time, andI never hear from most of them again.
Occasionally, I mistakenly send the rejection message to a bona fide
member, but a simple exchange of e-mails takes care of that.

Would it be possible to change the list so that potential new members
were required to write a brief paragraph about why they were interested
in the subject? That would at least slow the spammers down.

                In transit,
                Karen Sandness
