Over the past few months hundreds of cyclists have
been arrested in New York because of power a struggle
between one of the richest men in the world, the mayor
of New York, and a bunch of kids on bikes. The Mayor
wants the kids to apply for a permit to ride in a
group of undetermined numbers. One policeman was
quoted as saying that two were a group.
In Novembers Critical Mass the police department
employed two helicopters, 100 scooters, 50 police
cyclists,a dozen vans, and one flat-bed truck. The
police coordined off areas adjacent to the meeting
area, Union Square with orange netting. The cyclists
scattered however a few were arrested within one
block. One group of 4 was chased down and trapped in
another area with orange netting and charged with
riding without a parade permit. A total of 17 cyclists
were arrested that night. The police established a
presence outside of the Times-up Advocacy group, while
those inside danced.
In response, New York Critical Mass is now weekly.
Last nights ride was a great success and demonstrated
the resolve and love of the kids from for their bikes.
