Area's gasoline prices dropped this week, report shows

      Published: February 6, 2004
      ------------------------------------------------------------
While gasoline prices rose for the fifth straight week nationwide, the
average price of gasoline dropped in the St. Louis area by 5 cents a
gallon, the Auto Club of Southern California said Friday.

As of 12:01 a.m. Feb. 6, the average price of a gallon of gas in St.
Louis was $1.581 a gallon, down 5.1 cents from the same time last week.
The area's highest average price was in May 2001 at $1.767 a gallon.

Nationwide, the average price was $1.627 a gallon, up .004 cents from
      last week.

Carol Thorp, spokeswoman for the Auto Club, said the outlook is for
higher gasoline prices for at least the next month, mostly because the
refineries in California are switching from winter-grade to summer-grade
fuel. However, she said gasoline prices are expected to ease in the next
two to three weeks in most regions of the country.
