According to a Japanese friend of mine, the environment over there,
especially in regards to its rivers, is trashed. The movie "Spirited Away"
high-lights this twice: once when a "stink spirit" visits the bath house,
and again when Haku discovers that he's the spirit of the Kohaku River.
When he inquires as to its location, Chihiro tells him that it no longer
exists. It was filled in to make way for apartments. This was said in the
most casual "oh, by the way" tone of voice, in the dubbing at least.
