=v= It should not be forgotten that the point of the "Boycott
Esso" campaign is to stop global warming, not specifically to
support the Kyoto Protocal. It targets Esso/ExxonMobil because
of its financial support for G.W. Bush, whose quick dismissal
of the Kyoto Protocol is but a symptom of his fondness for
global warming. (His initials are another symptom, of course.)
=v= Thanks to Al Gore, the Kyoto Protocol is toothless, and thus
an ideal place for a neocon like Thomas Friedman to suggest
=v= If this "retreat" occurs, expect a spectacle of the right
wing whining about having been browbeaten by "enviro-whackos"
into an onerous anti-freedom regulatory straightjacket. Expect
the Democratic Party to play their role in the spectacle,
contritely "compromising" away yet more of the planet. Expect
the corporate sponsors of this bipartisan spectacle to continue
to pollute and heat the planet with impunity.
=v= Unless *we* do something about it.
