[carfree_cities] carfree cities in the U.S.
- I don't know of any completely car-free cities here in AutoLand (USA).
However, while doing a web search on the subject, I found a reference to a
Waikiki Neighborhood Board meeting where the notion of a car-free Waikiki
I don't know what the background is on this. Waikiki has turned into a
congested, free-fire zone of cars, trucks, tour buses, and high-rises
(guess the Hawaii Tourism Bureau better not read this post). A little
traffic calming would be nice. A lot of traffic calming would be even
nicer. As a tourist destination where people allegedly come to relax,
seeing a car-free Waikiki with parking on its outskirts would be a
Our Mayor (Harris) recently took a lane away from traffic on Kalakaua
Avenue (the main beachfront boulevard in Waikiki) and gave it over to
landscaping and wider sidewalks. That is a major step in the right
