Day wants to chop gas tax

EDMONTON (Alberta.com) -– Alliance Leader Stockwell Day wants to chop the
federal tax on gasoline taxes if his party gets a chance to form the next
      government.

The proposal, which Day raised during his campaign for the Alliance
leadership and tabled at Tuesday's meeting of Alliance MPs in Saskatoon,
would reduce the amount of Goods and Services Tax on fuel.

Day said Ottawa charges GST on top of other federal and provincial taxes
already piled on every litre of gasoline – a move he blasted as "runaway
      greed."

"It's total disrespect for people at the pumps," he said.

The plan would cap the amount of GST Ottawa could glean from the sale of
gasoline. The capping proposal is just one of a number of tax cuts the
former Alberta treasurer hopes to outline in a policy book this fall.

Day has often talked about eliminating the GST entirely, but says that it
would likely have to be done over several years. Even a small reduction in
the seven per cent GST would cost the federal government billions of
      dollars.

The aim of the three-day Alliance meeting in Saskatoon is to prepare MPs for
the fall section of Parliament and ready them for a possible federal
election either this fall or, more likely, next spring.
