Day wants to chop gas tax
EDMONTON (Alberta.com) - Alliance Leader Stockwell Day wants to chop the
federal tax on gasoline taxes if his party gets a chance to form the next
The proposal, which Day raised during his campaign for the Alliance
leadership and tabled at Tuesday's meeting of Alliance MPs in Saskatoon,
would reduce the amount of Goods and Services Tax on fuel.
Day said Ottawa charges GST on top of other federal and provincial taxes
already piled on every litre of gasoline a move he blasted as "runaway
"It's total disrespect for people at the pumps," he said.
The plan would cap the amount of GST Ottawa could glean from the sale of
gasoline. The capping proposal is just one of a number of tax cuts the
former Alberta treasurer hopes to outline in a policy book this fall.
Day has often talked about eliminating the GST entirely, but says that it
