The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) in New Orleans (Operates busses and
Streetcars) has just announce that the Canal Street streetcar line has now gotten
its financing together and will start construction this fall, and be open in 2003.
The money is coming from an increase in hotel/ motel tax in the NO area. This
could be used in other cities nationwide to pay for public transportation
projects. Also in the near future a streetcar line will be built along desire
street. It will reopen the famous line that Tennessee William wrote "A Streetcar
Names Desire" about. This new line will go through a part of the city that is
changing drastically. Once one of the poorest areas of NO, it is now part of an
urban revitalization project. More can be found at
      http://www.nola.com/t-p/national/index.ssf?/t-p/national/0008010101.html this is
very exciting for the city of NO since it has had alot of trouble paying for
      anything.
