Re: [carfree_cities] German freeway closed for party
- Hi Rick,
the BBC report + video is correct - short, but with the main facts. The origin idea was that this event is part of a larger cultural programme of North-Rhine Westphalia. so it was labeled with "culture", not "carfree" or "pro environment" or so ...
The organisers expected 1 million people on the Autobahn. Now it was 2 or 3 million. And yes, 60 kilometers were closed, one side of the autobahn for partying, the other side for mobility.
In the videos below, people say they enjoy the whole thing "it`s so great to walk and party on a autobahn!!!", and they are laughing about beeing again in a traffic jam "... like the other days when we are there in the car", but this time they like it because there is no noise, no waste gases etc, just this peaceful atmosphere.
Of cource there is lot of media coverage, but most in German, so I selected a few photo series and videos:
report, photos & videos from WDR, the broadcast of North-Rhine Westphalia:
"Entspannter Stau" means "relaxed traffic jam"
"Ruhrschleichweg" is a word game: normally this Autobahn is called "Ruhrschnellweg" (= fast road through the Ruhr region), and "Ruhrschleichweg" means the opposite: very slow road through Ruhr region
"Still-Leben" means silent/quiet life, or in paint still life (as a synonym against usual high speed on a autobahn)
video at ARD 20:00 ("Tagesschau") from that day (this is Germany`s most viewed political news in TV):
> click on the line "Kulturfestival `Still-Leben´" on the right side. The last words in the report are "tomorrow the road will be free again for the very normal daily insanity"later at ARD in "Tagesthemen" another report:
> click on "Autobahn-Umnutzung"360° Panorama:
click on "schließen", then it starts. you can select points of view in this interactive map on the right side.
report + photo series in "Spiegel" (Germany`s most important political magazin):
