Water treatment & Traffic in Portland OR
- Portland moves ahead again in its innovative program that combines
stormwater catchments with traffic calming. pedestrian, and bicycle
With car droppings a big part of stormwater pollutants, and a mandate
to clean up the Willammette River, Portland built deep planters at
strategic points, filled with native plantings that hold the water so
it can soak back into the ground before it hits the streets. Then
they integrated these with pedestrian architecture such as bulbouts
that reduce street crossing distances, and worked bike lanes and bike
boxes in the picture as well.
They went far beyond the usual catch and mechanically clean attitude
to integrate stormwater treatment with the underlying ecology of the
region, and beautify neighborhoods while opening up transport options.
Beautiful example of not "complete thinking"!
