Majority of Stockholm county residents support congestion tax
- Public support of the Stockholm congestion tax has increased.
After the six-month congestion tax trial in 2006, a majority of
residents in the Stockholm municipality supported the tax in opinion
polls and in a September 2006 plebiscite. But support in other
municipalities in the county was patchy. The ring of payment stations
roughly follows the Stockholm municipal border. The tax was restarted
in August 2007, permanently this time, or at least indefinitely.
A July 2008 opinion poll shows that almost 60% of county residents
now support the tax. The Stockholm municipality has 783 000
residents, while the whole county has 1,9 million residents,
including the municipality.
Before the six-month trial, most people were opposed. In December
2005, polls showed 69% of county residents were against. So the
support only came after the scheme was proven to work. It
reduced traffic by 20%.
