=v= As you can see, that Park Ave. was, quite literally, a park.
A similar effort was right across the river in Brooklyn, Ocean
Parkway, which was a landscaped stretch of road leading from
Prospect Park to the ocean, and also the home of the first bike
path in the U.S. (The path is still there, now multi-use, but
it's not all that safe or pleasant.)
=v= Car domination has screwed up both of these streets, and
done havoc to the language as well. In the U.S. a "parkway"
is now something for cars, and it might not have anything
green or otherwise parklike associated with it. We've taken
to using the word "greenway" for carfree routes.
