The pagusara family point to their starting person as actually a brother of the alfafaras but who was left behind in talisay and thus was left out of the giving out of the alfafara surname in carcar during the claveria decree. there must have been no close contact with the carcar folks because he could have held out until he knows what surname was chosen in carcar. This is because it is specifically provided in the decree that known family members must share the same name. because this is the very purpose of the decree.

Some went so far as to claim that the person chose pagusara because of its meaning, he was the only one. but i have my doubts with this second claim. first, i doubt one can chose the surname during the implementation of the decree. and second, similar to the paragraph above, since he knew his family was in carcar, he was entitled to have his father or brothers' surname and why didn't he choose it? unless he was so out of contact although talisay was not that far away and the giving out of the surnames would have been the most earth-shaking event of that time.

meanwhile, the alfafaras also shares the same story about their being related.

this family mystery has always interested me as a puzzle that may be solvable.

sometime last year, i came across a record  of a laurente patriarch for one of two lines of alfafara having been born in Talisay. Wow! Laurente's wife was a  joaquina maria.

then the pagusara records, jacinto pagusara was born in 1877 but mentioned his parents patricio and columba siboa/cebua, but no grandparents. bummer!

a death in laurente's branch in january 1894: martina, viuda of pedro alvarado, daughter of laorente and joaquin, both deceased. and another in  april same year maria alfafara, married to jose caballero, daughter of laorente and joaquina, who were now said to be deceased but natives and residents of san nicolas.

then in april 1895, patricio pagusara himself died. said to be born and resident of talisay, his parents were laorente and maria. why not joaquina because the two previous records the year before both had joaquina. was this the same person?

actually, this record would really have clinched it, and confirm the family lore. so close but the mystery will have to continue--just because joaquina is not named.
