A coarse-grained solution requires some sort of containment vessel for
the modules or widgets or gadgets or portlets, and a conduit system
which provides for limited communication, restricting message flow
only between authorized pairs, and keeping the messages free of object
      references.

The containment vessel is sometimes called a vat.

The conduit should be based on capability discipline. It should permit
communication between vats which are hosting programs in incompatible
languages. It should permit communication between vats on a page. We
should consider allowing communication with vats on different pages,
and vats in different applications. The immediate problem is to fix
the browser, but this could easily unify the browser and the new
      client platforms.
