CONFERENCE ON GENDER & POST-COLONIAL STUDIES IN LUSO-AFRO-BRAZILIAN STUDIES

October 7, 2009 – Dartmouth, MA. The University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture is pleased to host
the international conference “Gender, Empire and Postcolony:
Intersections in Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies” on Friday, 9 October
through Sunday, 11 October 2009. The principal objective of the
conference, co-organized by Anna M. Klobucka (UMD) and Hilary Owen (U of
Manchester), is to create a transdisciplinary forum for an in-depth
discussion of the interarticulation of gender theories and postcolonial
studies in relation to Portuguese, Brazilian and Lusophone African
cultural contexts. The program features nearly forty presenters from
Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Italy, United States, and United Kingdom, whose
scholarly interests focus on developing critical and theoretical
perspectives in the areas of postcolonialism and gender studies, with
specific, localized reference to Portuguese-speaking countries. The
disciplinary fields represented on the program include literary and
cultural studies, history, film studies, anthropology, and art history.
