Found this at UMass Boston site today as result of Google search. I used to
get notified of this annual event. Event used to have more of an
intellectual/activist thrust. In recent years more youth-oriented, though I
confess I've missed the last few years.

      Agenda?

Ditto, Richard...I think the "tourch has been passed" without us realizing it!  Oh, well... we may be getting older, but still quite useful.  Thank you for all you continue to do!!!!   Also, any chance we can say something here about the Federal Decennial Census that is coming up in 2010.  I am, once again, the Partnership Specialist for the Southcoast.  We have opened an office in New Bedford and are hiring full- and part- time folks.  BUT the main message I'd like to put forth is the EDUCATION of our community as to how important it is to fill out and mail back that questionnaire when they receive it in the Spring of 2010.

You may have seen the media conference Mayor Lang agreed to host last month to announce his city's full support of our initiative and to welcome the U.S. Census Bureau to his city as an employer, as well.  It is now airing on Public Access in N.B.

Just a thought, and I can understand if you cannot accommodate.  However, if you can, we have all the PSA and drop-in articles pre-printed and available without any extra work needed by you.  OR if you'd like to devise your own text, I can e-mail you a fact sheet...or drop one off at the college.  I was there 2 months ago visiting the CVSA to urge their support, as well.  Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR...CABRAL/MLK day!!!!

        Your Taunton friend, Barbara

Great, Catherine, and THANK YOU Richard for passing this important "civic duty" outreach along.  If there is one thing I think is the most important message to pass along to ALL CITIZENS...but especially our CV family and friends, it is to express the importance of being "COUNTED" in 2010.  So, by filling out the questionnaire, when in arrives in the Spring of 2010 and mailing it back in...we send a clear message that we care about our government, the funding that is returned to our cities and towns, and fair representation.  EDUCATION is the important factor...it is safe, easy and extremely important!!

There are Partnership Specialists in every state in the Country.  We are the "outreach" branch for the 2010 Census.  Our Massachusetts cadre will be 50-strong by the end of January...but, meanwhile, since we know it is a daunting task to reach everyone...there are countless jobs in various capacities so if you'd direct your communities to go to www.census.gov they can learn so much more.  feel free to e-mail me at my Census address which is barbara.burgo@... and I'll contact your local office for you to help identify your Partnership Specialist.  To assist with recruiting, at this point folks just need to take and pass a 28 question, basic skills test, be 18 or over, and a U.S. citizen... then pass a Federal background check.  The first wave of hiring has begun for obtaining an applicant pool of a "small army" of part-time, short-term hires (enumerators) who will canvass neighborhoods to complete Address Canvassing in April of this year,(using those hand-held computers that we've all been hearing about).  So, the silver lining to all this economic trouble...and folks without jobs...is the huge number of hiring we will do in the next year for the 2010 Census!!!   Good Luck and Happy New Year!
