      Berkeley: Zoramthanga (alias) Run Nawn the only Indian to win World Cup boxing championship medal passed away yesterday morning at Lunglei Civil Hospital in Mizoram state of India due to hypertension.

       

      Since Mr. Zoramthanga, won the bronze medal at Bombay World Cup in 1990, he became the most popular boxer in India and among the Chin/Mizo.

       

      He was born in Selawn village of Falam township, Chin state Burma. His family later moved to Tithim village near Tahan-Kalaymyo where he joined the Burmese army.

       

      Mr. Zoramthanga started playing boxing in the Burmese army. However, knowing his success will be limited in the Burmese army he moved to Mizoram state of India and started his career in 1985. He won Mizoram championship and the best boxer title the same year.

       

      For the next several years, he went on to winning glory in several national and international championships.

       

      When he come home at Aizawl after he won World Cup Boxing championship medal in 1990, citizen of Aizawl, the Capital of Mizoram state, overwhelmingly gave him a hero welcome.

       

      Mr. Zoramthanga was latter awarded Sports Promotion Officer of the state, the position he hold till his death, by the Mizoram government.

       

      The death of Mr. Zoramthanga is irreplaceable loss for the entire Chin/Mizo people.
