      Dear Allen,
I changed out my Perkins for a Beta 1505, 37.5 HP and had the company put on a Parker hydraulic pump which fit right in. I had to drill and tap new engine mount holes but it fit fine. It also saved so weight. I am not sure but I think the hydraulic pump makes a little more noise than the origonal. I have been sailing it since about 2006 and still going fine.
Look around and see if someone will mate a more modern pump to a new engine, it might be a better alternative.

Thank you for your offer. We hadn't really thought about something other than new. That gives us another option.

      Hi Allen,
If it’s any use, I have a Westerbeke (Perkins) 40 for sale.  It was in running condition when I pulled it from our 1970 Nic 38 for a re-power.  The best part is that it has a freshly rebuilt Paragon transmission.  This was the set-up our Nic 38 came with originally.  If you are interested please contact me directly.  I would be glad to sell separately or together.

We have a '76 CN35 hull number 130 with a Perkins 40 HP connected to a hydraulic pump that the drive shaft is connected to. We purchased her in Feb. 2009. Within 30 days the front seal in the pump failed. We had the pump rebuilt at that time. Everything has been fine since then. This weekend the front seal is bad again. I have no idea how many hours the engine has so instead of trying to get the pump rebuilt again I'm considering repowering and getting away from the hydraulics. I would like to see how some else accomplished this. What I'm having trouble working through is the shaft exits that the aft end of the keel. How/where would you install the engine to match the existing shaft location? Thank you, Allen
