Most of the  rural  projects are not successful  due to  lack of  service  and backup support. As rural folks have no clue to overcome problems they faced during the project. So

any level of communication backup, be it ICT or Mobile phones  are going to be big support for  some tangible results.

FYI:We are in a process to develop  Rural Call Center for 5 Distt.'s (3 in Garhwal and 2  in Kumoun) in Uttarakhand for some livelihood  projects. Will keep you update  as and when it is finalized.

          Dear Shahid,

LifeLines-India (in collaboration with Cisco, BT and OneWorld
International Foundation) is a service that facilitates the
dissemination of critical livelihood and development information in a
timely manner to rural communities, using an innovative mix of telephony
and the Internet; and leveraging the power of 'voice' as the medium of
          information exchange.

The LifeLines service has been able to provide the rural farming
communities with critical e-content on various agriculture and
agro-business related issues: the diverse modes of farming, the various
types of methods to be adopted for their cultivation, the agriculture
inputs required, farm management, agriculture risk management, disease
and pest management, and livestock & dairy. Additionally farmers also
get weather guidance, updates about the market (prices, quality etc.)
          and relevant Government schemes.

The Service has been successfully implemented in 700 villages across 4
states Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, & Uttar Pradesh and on
an average 350-400 calls received and answered in a day.

          Regards,

          Lokesh

i have come across a very interesting use of mobile phones for agriculture.

in sironj block, vidisha district in MP works an ngo called Pradaan which has about 3000 farmers as their members.

this group is being provided 100 mobile phones with cameras who in turn will provide these to the selected farmers. during the sowing and the progress of the crops, these farmers will take pics from the fields and immediately forward the same to a central server connected thru the mobile. the pics then will be analysed by specialists and offer expert guidance to the farmers then and there.

i think this is a great example of mobile telephony being put to great use. i hope that more and more of this will be adopted.

All these ideas that you are sharing seems to be all NGO driven projects. I am trying to find a project that is self-sustaining. It could have been initially development partner funded. I am interested to develop a business model based on these technology and a good part may be in technology, agriculture and communication.
