    Art Coordinator Report 2012-2013

    OVERALL MISSION:  PROVIDE HIGH-QUALITY, STANDARDS-BASED ARTS CURRICULUM IN AREAS OF VISUAL ARTS, DANCE, MUSIC, POETRY AND THEATER, SO AS TO ADVANCE LEARNING AND EDUCATION THROUGH CREATIVITY

    Coordinated Specialists, schedules, and submitted payrolls as needed for residencies: Folklorico Dance for K/1/2. Modern Dance for 3/4/5. Acrosports for K. MusicianCorps guitar/rock band instruction for 6/7/8. SFUSD Instrumental Music for 3/4/5’s. SF Ballet Dance in Schools for 3rd grade, Spring semester. Megan McMahon (art) and Hilda Chavez (music) classes for K/2/4/5 in Fall and Spring.

    Coordinated Spectra Visual Art Program: Communicated with grade levels about appropriate art lessons. Bought or solicited supplies. Recruited, scheduled, periodically met with 30 parents who supported or taught on a weekly or bi-monthly basis. Devised lessons as needed. Worked with parents to do classroom projects for Gran Pachanga fundraiser.

    Scheduled ongoing Special Programs: AIMS Music Program; SF Opera Guild Programs: Opera a la Carte “Pirates of Penzance” and Sing a Story. Lamplighter’s play “Pirates of Penzance “ with 5th grade. Coordinated ShadowLight shadow puppet program for 4th & 5th grade ; over 20 visits by professional puppeteer Leonidas Kassipides who worked with Laura Gold to prepare culminating performances in December (Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta Play) and May (The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane). Performances for all of these during and after school. Streetside Stories residency for David Johnson’s 6th Grade class.

    Scheduled Assemblies: Black History Month Assembly; 6/7/8 Latino Heritage Music Assembly; Woody’s Playhouse Literacy Assembly for SPED/K/1/2; K/1/2/4/5 Dance and Music Assemblies (December and May); AIMS concerts for K/1/2’s and 3/4/5’s (4 each with different ensembles for upper and lower grades).

    Field Trips: Scheduled and/or provided transportation for following performances or exhibitions: Arboretum visits (K/1); Velveteen Rabbit at Yerba Buena Art Center (3rd Grade); SF Opera for “Tosca”, & Bell Ringing at Union Square (6/7/8 Honor Choir); Children’s Creativity Museum for Claymation Class (5th Grade); SF Ballet Performance (3rd Grade); Lawrence Hall of Science, Berkeley, 7th/8th Grade; Asian Art Museum (7th Grade); Hidden Villa, Los Altos (2nd Grade); Sailing on Treasure Island (5th/SPED); Cal Academy of Sciences (K/1/3/4/5); Recology Transfer Waste Station (3rd Grade); Exploratorium (2nd Gr. and one 5th class);Young at Art Festival at Asian Art Museum (K/1/4/5) ; AIMS Symphonies at Davies Hall (different visits by upper and lower grades); Word for Word at Z Space (4th Grade); Ezra Jack Keats exhibit at Contemporary Jewish Museum (Kinder), with classroom visits by docents for Kinders and parent visit as well, with evening event at BVHM; visits to various parks and locales, including Chinatown (2nd); Randall Museum (1st Grade); Presidio for camping (Ben’s class); Artists Studio in the Mission (Megan’s 5th Period); Mission Playground (5th and 7th); Dolores Park (3rd Grade).

    Coordinated Special Events: Halloween photos: found photographers, recruited volunteers, scheduled, displayed. Carnaval: with Judy Diaz headed Carnaval team, assisted in concept, design, logistics, recruiting, painting. planning. Member of Gran Pachanga committee: helped promote contest for same, and coordinate classroom projects for sale at Pachanga. 3rd Grade Papel Picado workshop by paper artist Juan Pablo Gutierrez.

    Outreach: Artwork outside school: Five class projects and five individual artworks to be displayed at the Youth Arts Festival at Asian Art Museum, with buses arranged to view this display. Laura Gold’s ELD and Hilda Chavez’s 6/7/8 Honor Choir performed “Pirates of Penzance” at Youth Arts Festival at Asian Art Museum, viewed by the 4/5’s.  4/5th Grade Instrumental Musicians performed at Elementary Music Festival. 6/7/8 MusicCorps students performed at Bartlett Farmers Market. Altar contributions for Community Music Center Altar at SF Symphony Dia de los Muertos concerts. Displayed one painting in SFUSD “Art Teacher’s Art” Exhibit at Bethany Senior Center at 20th and Capp. Worked with committee to bring in Victor Reyes to do a mural on Valencia Street.

    Contests:  Schoolwide poster contest for Gran Pachanga. Poetry contest for African American History month. Contest for mosaic design for Garden.

     

    Communications and Reporting:Liased with staff, surveyed same as to effectiveness of art enrichments. Prepared and evaluated two teacher surveys of art program. Liased with Principal Jennifer Steiner , CSC Jae Maldonado, PTA Presidents and PTA Treasurers about budget for art programs. Reported to SFUSD Visual and Performing Arts Office about activities at BV; a major evaluation of BVHM arts program done for SFUSD Arts Office. Worked with PTA and concerned parents to continue program to buy or get donations for instruments to loan to needy music students. Met bi-monthly with Megan and Hilda, the 6/7/8 Art and Music Teachers.

    Funding: Wrote and received funding for Target grant to provide transportation for 7/8 students to attend Lawrence Hall of Science. Wrote grants seeking funding from PTA Relections Program and from Target for 1st grade Folklorico dance.

    Outreach to Community: Emailed staff and parents of arts opportunities (over 55 emails this school year); served as Prop H. Art Coordinator: attended meetings of Coordinators, shared arts information. Continued service on Board of ArtSpan/Art for City Youth non-profit to advocate for art education for inner city students. Worked with ACY to offer off-site visits to artists studios for 6/7/8’s.
