PEDESTRIAN SAFETY THE FOCUS OF SF POLICE CAMPAIGN
      06/27/06 8:55 PDT
      SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)

The San Francisco Police Department is launching a pedestrian safety
campaign that includes focused enforcement for a year by 19 traffic
motorcycle officers, Sgt. Bob Guinan announced today.

Traffic officers will focus on enforcing requirements to yield to
pedestrians and causes for collisions such as speeding through red
      lights
      and stop signs.

According to the University of California, Berkeley's Traffic Safety
      Center,
pedestrian deaths account for about 20 percent of California's traffic
      fatalities.

SFPD records show that in 2005, 755 pedestrians were injured by car
collisions and that walkers accounted for half of all collision-related
      deaths.

A pedestrian safety violation is a $155 citation, according to the
      Police
      Department.

The campaign will include radio and billboard advertisements beginning
      July
      10.
