From my understanding/experience, most of the cross-border travel is either recreational (Canadians wanting to take advantage of buying things in the US that you can't get in Canada, and the US taking advantage of the lower Canadian dollar) or business (a vast majority of which are long-distance truckers.) I don't think there's too many non-truckers (and similar industry types) doing cross-border employment; as I mentioned in my introductory email, my sister lives in Emerson, MB (with her house just mere steps from the actual borderline), she mentioned that many of her daughter's teachers live in the US, and thus her school is probably the only one in Manitoba that is closed on both Canadian and US holidays.
