Don Glaister and Suzanne Moore live on Vashon Island near Seattle.
They share a home with their dog Rothko.
Suzanne Moore is a painter and lettering artist who combines
contemporary vision with traditional techniques. Her painting, drawing
and lettering End their way to the surfaces of artists' books,
broadsides and limited edition books. Suzanne sees books as
interactive portable spaces created to transport readers, offering
perspectives on such subjects as the intersection of art with science
and philosophy, letterforms as visual subject, and Sequoyah-Cherokee
writing system. She uses the book form to explore verbal and visual
ideas through the interplay of word and image.
Suzanne's books appear in private collections and institutional
collections in North America and Europe. She is one of two American
artists, working with a Wales-based team under the direction of Donald
Jackson, illuminating the Saint John's Bible.
Donald Glaister is a book artist now living and working in the Pacific
Northwest. His thirty-year professional career in design bookbinding
has centered on the exploration, development and use of unexpected
binding materials, visual humor and spontaneous expression, while
working within the classical framework of the European binding form.
The scope of his recent work has expanded to include two editions of
artist's books, Brooklyn Bridge: A Love Song in 2002, and Angelique
and the Pearl Necklace in 2007.
Don has taught binding and design privately and as professor of Book
Arts at the University of Alabama. His bindings appear in
institutional and private collections throughout North America and Europe.

newspaper, cloth, etc. are pasted together in incongruous relationship
for their symbolic or suggestive effect.

The roots of collage reach back centuries to Asian roots. The distinct
possibilities of the process are virtually untouched in most current
work. Beneath the deceptively simple appearance of the collage medium
is a process that is more akin to an engrossing puzzle or strenuous
visual calisthenics. The resulting pieces will be unique to the
process and to the vision and aesthetic of each designer. Creating,
deconstructing and generating completely new images is the process we
will use to make a series of collage works.
This class will incorporate mark-making, design, and collage
techniques through individual experimentation. Painting will provide
the finesse when necessary, and various attachment techniques will be
discussed and applied. Students will complete at least three 2-D
pieces incorporating various collage techniques and design concepts.
Artists, book artists, designers and lettering artists of all stripes
interested in expanding their repertoire are welcome.

Clark Humanities Museum
The Clark Humanities Museum will be open from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. on
February 23 for the exhibition
Hot Off the Press: Twenty-first Century Artist Books from Denison
Library at Scripps College.
Note that the opening reception will be held on the evening of January
31, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. where you can meet the students and ask them
about the exhibition that they curated. They also wrote the catalog
for the exhibit and made a DVD showing all the books in the exhibit,
including their own artist books.
