Start the New Year creatively at the Long Beach Museum of Art.

Artist Rory Golden will lead a mixed-media artist-bookmaking workshop
on Saturday, January 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Miller
Education Center Boeing Classroom on the Museum campus.

Painted, Laminated, Glazed and Waxed: an Expressive Longstitch Journal

This class is packed with inventive paper decoration techniques, all
incorporated into a very solid yet flexible structure. We'll make one
blank book with covers that students design using Rory's methods to
achieve rich, painterly effects. After laminating layers of paper,
we'll draw, paint and collage the interior and exterior of the covers,
then laminate a sheet of mulberry (kozo) paper on top. A layer of
beeswax transforms the mulberry paper, which becomes translucent—the
      images underneath pop out!

Participants will learn non-traditional paper lamination, paper
glazing, pastepaper painting, gesso drawing and paper waxing. We'll
sew the books in the longstitch slotted spine style. This exposed
sewing technique allows the book to flip 180 degrees back on itself,
making it a sturdy and appealing travel journal or sketchbook.

About the instructor: Rory Golden is the former executive director of
the Center for Book Arts in New York where he organized the exhibition
Washi in American Artist's Books. A visual artist whose artist's books
are in public and private collections around the county, he holds an
MFA in Book Arts from the University of Alabama. Golden recently
completed a residency at Bemis Sculpture Center in Omaha, NE.

Who should take this inspiring workshop? Artists in all media,
classroom teachers, poets and writers, and any adults looking for a
jump start in creative expression in 2007!

Fee: $100 for non-Museum members; $85 for Museum members + small
      materials fee TBA.

Early registration by check made payable to the Long Beach Museum of
Art is encouraged. Enrollment will be limited. Send checks with a
Rory Golden Memo to the Education Dept, Long Beach Museum of Art, 2300
      E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, CA 90803.

      Happy New Year.
