The Buenaventura Art Association is hosting Ines Monguio as the featured artist from December 13 to January 14 at the Buenaventura Gallery, 700 Santa Clara, Ventura. There will be a reception on December 17, 4:00 to 7:00 PM.

"Layers", the title of the show refers to the way she works as well as being a tongue-in-cheek reference to meaning in art. Ines' images often start with an impulsive choice of color and stroke. The image is built up from there through rational analysis and intuitive responses to the developing work. The "meaning" of the image is as layered as the evolution of the final work. The exhibition includes watercolors, monotypes, and etchings. The images range from bold references to modernism to subdued interpretation of surrealist landscapes. Examples of her most recent series include simplified human silhouettes in ambiguous relationships to each other and to the background.

Monguio came late to defining herself as an artist. As a young person she explored a variety of art forms until surprisingly she chose a career in behavioral science. She has a busy practice in Neuropsychology that kept her absorbed for years until she could not deny any longer that she was missing something important in her life. Ines returned to making art, and this gave her the sought-after balance. Recently she was asked about the variety of subjects and treatments that she has displayed through the years. She explained it this way: "I imagine I have around 30 years left to live. That's limiting enough. I won't limit myself further because of style or fashion in art."

The show will run from December 13 to January 14, 2006. There will be a reception on Saturday, December 17 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. The gallery is located at 700 East Santa Clara in Ventura. The phone is 805/648-1235. Their website can be found at www.buenaventuragallery.org.
