14005Inviting participation in the AWC 2014
- Jan 8, 2014Dear all,
The annual Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) programme starts this weekend. The recommended dates are Sat 11 to Sun 26, Jan 2014, covering two weeks and three weekends.
The AWC is an annual event for collection and dissemination of information on waterbirds and wetlands. This long-running monitoring programme is being implemented through networks of 1000s of volunteers like you across India, Asia and the rest of the world (the International Waterbird Census); thus serves as one of the largest citizen-science monitoring and conservation programmes in the world. The results of the census and information are being used to promote local and national waterbird and wetland conservation issues as well as international action.
To promote more rapid and standardized collection of data and to reduce the use of paper, for the AWC 2014 we are testing the use of a new Excel-based AWC Count & Site Form for participants to enter and submit counts. This may be downloaded from the AWC website (www.wetlands.org/awc Documents page) and will shortly on the Indian Bird Conservation Network (IBCN) (www.ibcn.in). We encourage you to use this form to submit your 2014 counts. If you are unable to use the Excel form, kindly use the 2014 updated printed versions: PDF Form is http://south-asia.wetlands.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=VErQDKhhWBs%3D&tabid=2895&mid=12225 and Word Form is http://south-asia.wetlands.org/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=5BaWkp%2BrpQs%3D&tabid=2895&mid=12225
We request you to go through the guidelines given in the form and fill in as much information as possible. If you have participated in previous year’s count for a particular site, kindly cover the site this year also. We would also appreciate if you would cover as many sites as possible and encourage more participation. Kindly provide names of all participants in the form so that they may be listed in AWC national reports.
Kindly complete and provide your counts to the state coordinator Dr. Anil B Pimplapure, anilpimplapure@... and cc awc@... (for all AWC related email).
Additionally, please try to cover Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in your vicinity and complete a Flyway Site Assessment form (IBA Monitoring form) you can also download from the IBCN website (www.ibcn.in). Kindly fill this form and return to your IBCN State Coordinator or the BNHS office. Soft copies can be sent to ibabnhs@....
