NEW SAVANNA: Cultural Evolution 9: Language Games 2, Story Telling
NEW SAVANNA: Cultural Evolution 9: Language Games 2, Story TellingI’ve got links to two posts. One is an addendum to my previous post on language.
The other is a post on literature. In it I present an idea I originally presented in an open letter to Steven Pinker which I published at The Valve (and to which he responded). That used his work on indirect speech as a starting point in an argument the characterized story-telling as being indirect in a similar way. As example stories, I used some of the Trickster stories that Paul Radin collected. Those stories are of such a nature that it’s pretty hard to argue that they persist for utilitarian reasons.
I also mount a defense of Roland Barthes’ (in)famous article on the death of the author.
