Dear List Members, Hi!!! When Professor Garfinkel and Dr. Ganor and
their team began excavating at Khirbet Qeiyafa, they were very excited
about the ostracon found there. Father Emile Puech recently published
his theory that the ostracon might be talking about the start of the
Israelite monarchy with the installation of King Saul. As time goes by,
it appears that more scholars(Drs. Levin and Leval) are leaning to the
King Saul over King David dating of the finds found at Khirbet Qeiyafa.
If King Saul was ruling over Khirbet Qeiyafa when it was built, I find
it very interesting that the thumb print jar handles made at Khirbet
Qeiyafa have been found at Tel Dan and Beer-sheba and sites in between.
Most have been found at Khirbet Qeiyafa. I am guessing that these five
to 600 jar handles represent five to 600 jars of wine, olive oil, wheat,
and other war provisions that the Israelite Kingdom's Army under Saul
needed to fight the Philistines. After the war was over, the unbroken
jars circulated throughout Saul's Kingdom until they were broken or
forgotten. The thumb print has no epigraphy or iconography. Also the
cultic shrines from Khirbet Qeiyafa have no epigraphy or any special
iconography. With Much Gratitude, Sincerely Yours, Michael Welch,
