      Many thanks for the public and private emails on the matter.

      To summarize broadly.

      1.  The topic is not studied in enough detail to document the overall effectiveness of butterflies as pollinators (this includes Monarchs)

      2. There is evidence that butterflies play important roles in some situations, but simply from general observations, network, and simple visitation rates it is clear that butterflies are very likely to be unimportant in many circumstances.

      3.  Monarchs likely fall into the lesser of pollinator categories, but Peter and others make the valid point that the critical studies have not taken place and there is interesting possibilities that they provide small but perhaps significant long-distance transport of gametes among isolated populations.

      I just got off a call and made your points to the group.  The administators were concerned because they are housing Monarch efforts under an important pollinator umbrella.  Made the suggestion that this is a topic the Feds could impact.

      We will see what happens.

      Again thanks for all the responses.

      I'VE watched you now a full half-hour;
      Self-poised upon that yellow flower
      And, little Butterfly! Indeed
      I know not if you sleep or feed.
      How motionless! -- not frozen seas
      More motionless! And then
      What joy awaits you out among the trees,
      And calls you forth again!
