I just went through the same thing and found the most cost effective measure was to get labels custom ordered. I bought a 6' corded scanner (Honeywell model 1900) for around $300 on Amazon and had 6,300 labels printed for $140 from Electronic Imaging. In hindsight it may have been wiser to buy a cordless model, but it hasn't been too much of a hassle. I've attached an example and quote. My project is for only two years so I didn't see the need to spend project funds on a printer.  Hope this helps.
