Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society
May 23, 2006 through February 24, 2006

The exhibit explores or attitudes toward death and traces the origins of our traditions. The exhibit provides an overview of death in the Victorian era, mourning ettiquete, mourning clothing and accessories. Attention is given to the many diverse and common ways grief and loss can be expressed Touching examples of lives commemorated encourage connections to our own experiences with death. A variety of memorials are displayed with particular attention given to the rural cemetery movement of the 19th century. A circa 1930 home funeral scene provokes conversations about the evolution of the funeral business. Trade ledgers, receipts, photographs and other rich primary sources provide further visual cues.
