And another wrinkle this year is the Harmony Explosion Bike-A-Thong 2007:

          BIKING FOR BARBERSHOP

Bart Van de Mark is no ordinary Barbershopper. Bart, 68, President of
the Martin/St. Lucie Mariners Barbershop Chorus and one of the
Coordinators of this year's Sizzle event, is dedicated to the idea
that the future of this original, American vocal art form in the
Sunshine District [all of Florida] is the young men of Florida. He's
willing to put his body on the line to prove that point.

To raise money for this year's Harmony Explosion Camp for high school
boys on the University of Central Florida campus in Orlando the
weekend of June 14-17, 2007, Bart plans to hop on his bicycle and
bike from his home in Port Saint Lucie to the Sunshine District
Spring Convention in Jacksonville, a distance of about 250 miles.

Harmony Explosion [HX] Camp is an annual event for high school
students and their music teachers conducted by professional music
educators from around the country. The kids spend an entire weekend
immersing themselves in the Barbershop style and then put on a
performance that Saturday night to show what they've learned. It
costs $150.00 per student or teacher. That amount provides their
room, board, and music at the Camp. Every $150 raised means one more
boy or teacher can attend on a scholarship.

Sizzle is Sunshine District's Barbershop craft weekend for anyone who
wants to learn more about Barbershop harmony. HX Camp and Sizzle run
concurrently at UCF every year during the Father's Day weekend.

Bart is soliciting scholarship pledges for every mile he bikes. Here
          are his own words:

"I'm going to pedal my bicycle to Jacksonville from St. Lucie County
for the 2007 Spring Convention. Again. The trip expenses will come
out of my pocket. It's a four day trip of about 250 miles. And I
ain't gettin' younger. So this year, I thought I'd provide myself
some incentive by raising scholarship money for kids to attend
Harmony Explosion or for their parents to attend Sizzle. Sort of a
one man "bike-a-thong". Except I'll be wearing bike shorts. No
          pictures, please.

"I'm also doing it to generate local interest in the Society and what
we're about on the part of singing youth of all ages and their mentors.

"I'm asking that you back my trip at 10c / mile for a single share.
That comes to $25.00. If I can convince six people to participate,
that'd be one scholarship. Pretty good. But six or eight scholarships
would be better, huh? The scholarships would be available to any kid
          in the state.

"If you are inclined to give the kids some help on this, please write
your checks to Sunshine District and note on that little line down
below that it's for Harmony Explosion Bike-a-Thong. Mail it off to:

          Don Long
          Sunshine District Treasurer
          3921 Applegate Circle
          Brandon, FL 33511.

"In return, I will thank you warmly and personally autograph your
bike shorts. Cleaned and pressed, of course."

          ***

Bart began the journey on Monday, April 30, 2007, early in the
morning. He made the first leg Cocoa. On Tuesday [May 1], Bart
reached New Smyrna Beach where he'll was greeted by members of the
Daytona Beach Metro Chapter [Surfside Chorus] at their Chapter
meeting. Wednesday [May 2], he continued up US 1 to St. Augustine.
Thursday [May 3] morning he left for the shortest leg to
Jacksonville. Bart expects to reach the Crown Plaza in Jacksonville a
little after lunch which will give him plenty of time to recover
before the Convention activities begin on Friday.

This is the plan. There may be adjustments along the way and we'll be
getting live updates via his cell phone as he heads north.

There is still plenty of time for you to make your pledge to this
effort. Send your checks or money orders to the address above and
send Bart an email of confirmation. You can contact him at:

          "Bart Van de Mark" <roadwarriorbvd@...>.

You may pledge as many shares [10 cents a mile for 250 miles = $25 =
one share] as you wish. ALL the money collected will go to HX Camp
          Scholarships for 2007.

If you need more information or wish to schedule live interviews with
Bart along the way, contact me via email or call me at: FUN-290-3452
          and I'll hook you up.
