Re: [bbshop] Gangsta Shop Quartet (BBS in the media in general)
- This gangstashop piece from MadTV has been around for nearly ten years. I thought it was hysterical then, and I think it is even funnier seeing it again today.
I was singing in a quartet in the FWD when I first saw this bit. I told my quartet buddies about it and we would use this as part of our private rehersal routine just to amuze ourselves.
Great stuff, all of it -- and thanks for sharing the other UTube links.

When I first saw the Gangsta Shop Quartet, I thought it was hilarious as well. It's a sad fact
that most people have such a bad idea about barbershop quartets because of uninformed stereotypes.
Barbershop quarteting has showed up in many places familiar with youth as a joke of sorts. It
seems to me that our hobby has become the embodiment of an antiquated style of music that is
better suited as a joke than a legitimate form of "popular" music.
I'm not saying that I agree with this, I'm just calling it like I see it. If you were to ask the
youth of our generation about barbershop quartets, 9 times out of 10 you'd probably get a response
about it being boring old songs that their grandparents used to listen to (a.k.a. "uncool"). On
the other hand though, ask the same kids about Phish, or Boyz 2 Men, or any of the pop groups that
do A capella harmony, and they'll tell you right away that those groups are cool and tat they like
those songs done in 4 part harmony.
Babbershopping has had some funny moments in the media though. They dedicated an entire episode
of the Simpsons to a story line where Homer had a barbershop Quartet.
The TV show Scrubs has a recurring quartet, 4 members of the hospital staff sing 4-part harmony,
and they pop up every now and then to sing a few bars.

this compilation, but they aren't too bad)
A recent video has been circulating the net where a barbershop quartet does a version of the Ewoks
song from Star Wars (it was shown on a TV show, and now has almost 30,000 views)
There's a set of videos on YouTube in which "Barbershop Quartets have taken over the world. They
have forbidden all other types of music." When they find someone playing an instrument or
singing, they kill them by singing the ultimate overtone.

"Family Guy" has used a barbershop quartet joke more than once. They had a clip in one episode
where they joked about one character entering a talent show to do his impression of a barbershop
quartet, then they showed him walking around in the striped vest and straw hat singing all 4 parts
by himself. They had an episode where a barbershop quartet sang a song about vasectomies when one
character was considering one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-VOg_V_3x4) They had another
episode where a character mentions how bad he is at delivering bad news, then it shows him
singing, with a barbershop quartet, to a patient in the hospital to break the news to him that he
has HIV. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxFyjtbXMI0)
There was a snack food commercial trying to put across that their product was "twisted", so they
had a barbershop quartet sing a song about how they'd beat you up if you tried to take their
There's a comedy group in Cleveland who does a skit where they are a "racist barbershop quartet"
I'm not even going to bother posting a link to that one.
There was an old Sesame Street "barbershop quartet" appearance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUD0TBqf4xM
