Late last week, a lady from the Seattle, WA, area called Northbrook
Chapter for (like a singing Valentine) a quartet to serenade her Dad
who has been a Barber in Evanston (first suburb N of Chicago) and was
retiring after many years on Saturday. Northbrook is a little busy
right now, but after a few telephone calls, it was arranged that two
area Chapter Presidents, one Chapter VP, and one Chapter Coach sang in
his shop Saturday in honor of his retirement. This morning she said
"your singing for him was absolutely great! A real highlight and a day
      he'll always remember."
Having a very active group of barbershop singers in the Chicago
Metropolitan area along with ten active chapters including almost 600
members is fun for all. We are also enjoying nurturing a potential new
chapter in the heart of downtown.

Having been born and raised in Wisconsin, living there 26 1/2 years I
was groomed to despise Illinois. Especially Chicago, due to the Bears.
But after moving here to Naperville and living here for 7 months I see
what a shame it was to have been raised that way. There are so many
outstanding people here, especially BBS'ers. I was hoping that someone
would make a great arguement for Chicago being the best BBS city.

          Todd,
Most Chicago area barbershoppers are too modest to make such a brash claim as being the *Best Barbershop City*. Just because the area has produced 6-7 (I'm not sure how many won in the 1940's) SPEBSQSA International Champion Quartets, probably some SAI and HI champion quartets, the several-time SAI champion Melodeers chorus, Village Vocal Chords (HI chorus champ?), and a SPEBS chorus whose string of consec-tive silver medals will probably *never* be broken, is no reason to get too full of ourselves. Leave that to those less secure in their barbershophood.

Well, time for my two cents.

I think there are two metro areas that have a lot of barbershop going
on in them that haven't been mentioned. The San Francisco bay area
has three great Sweet Adeline choruses (Mission Valley, Bay Area
Showcase, and Pacific Empire), and they have the Pot O' Gold chorus,
the best small chorus west of the Mississippi (well, for now, Pacific
sound is on the rise!) Numerous quartets have come from both of these
chapters, and when Harmony Inc has spread it wings nationwide, they
will have some good chapters over there too.

Also, I think the Washington-Baltimore metroplex should be high on the
list. It is home to the Alexandria Harmonizers, 4-time Intl.
chorus Champs, and the Chorus of the Chesapeake (MY CHAPTER!!!),
2-time Intl. chorus Champs. Also contained there is BSQ, 5-time
medalist, Premiere, Hijinx, Casino, the Oriole Four (1970 Intl.
Champs), Signature Sound (2000 SA Queens),Night Magic (SA 3rd place
medalists), the Pride of Baltimore chorus (highest scoring small SA
chorus in the world!!!), the Harbor City Music Company (headed for the
top ten in Nashville!!!), the Dundalk Sweet Adelines (Intl. Silver and
Bronze medalist), Vienna-Falls (SA Intl. Chorus champs), B&O
connection (former medalist), the Regents (1974 Intl. Champs) and
numerous great individuals, like Fred King, Janet Ashford, Scott
Werner, Gary Plaag, Kevin King, Mike Gellert,Rick Taylor, Terry
Reynolds, Walter Latzko, and the late Dean Snyder. We were even home
to the first chapter to ever HOST and WIN an International contest,
the Singing Capitals Chorus, who aceived that feat back in 1954 (we
also have a LOT of history here.)

                  OK Folks,

Now it's time to make an argument for Stockholm, Sweden.

                  Men's side:

Jambalaya - Several time SNoBS quartet champions; Current European Champions
and going for a repeat in Glasgow this weekend; Have competed in the last 4
International contests and will make it 5 in a row in Nashville; 1st quartet
(that I know of) from outside of North America to join SPEBS and qualify for
International at a SPEBS' prelims; World famous for the "Jambalaya arm
spread". Truly a ground breaking foursome.

Old Spice - Several time SNoBS quartet champions and International
                  competitors.

Good Time Singers - The "Viking" quartet that won everyone's hearts in San
Antonio, 1988 with none other than the legendary Lars-Erik Bonnedahl singing
bass (Growing Girls' Anna's father and Rnninge Show Chorus' Britt-Helne
                  Bonnedahl's husband).

The EntertainMen - The highest placing chorus ever from outside of North
America at the International contest (The Vikings in Salt Lake City,
                  1996.....9th place).

The Stockholm Chordmasters - The fabulous, Louisville Times-like small
chorus that has competed twice at International. Watch out for them in
                  Glasgow.

                  Ladies' side:

Growing Girls - 1989 Queens of Harmony. Need I say more.

All Time High - Several time Nordic champion quartet and top 20 at
International on more than one occasion.

Spice of Life - Several time Nordic champion quartet and competitor at
                  International.

Artistocats - Region 32 quartet champions (with Growing Girls' Malin and
Anna); Finished 17th at the Nashville International.

ReMix - Went to the Orlando International last Fall as a wild card quartet
and finished 15th, automatically qualifying them for Portland.

SALT - Current Region 32 champion quartet (with Growing Girls' baritone Anna
singing tenor); Finished 20th in Orlando.

Rnninge Show Chorus - World class chorus under the direction of
Britt-Helne Bonnedahl; Finished as high as 2nd in New Orleans (even led
after the first round with Richtones in 2nd); This is the chorus Growing
                  Girls comes from.

Sunlight Chorus - Fabulous chorus having their breakthrough finishing 2nd at
the International contest in Atlanta a couple of years ago.

Stockholm City Chorus - Third ladies chorus from the Stockholm area that
will be dangerous at International soon; Directed by Anna Nyberg
(fantastically innovative and talented arranger...you'll find her name on
                  the back of Rumors'<Queens from Dallas> CD's.

Hope I didn't leave anyone important out. If so....sorry.

                  Whew!
                  Doug Harrington
