How I Got Hooked
- Can't let it go by since it was the Elastic Four ( members of the
quartet and the Chordetts that undone me:
As a young and badly budding "Jazz Wannabe", I was walking down Rush
Steet in Chicago one evening, and a "older gentleleman" tapped me on
the sholder and said, "you've got to be Hank Hedges' son!(one of the
first member's of the Chicago #1 Chapter). "You walk just like Him"
Wearily admitting to this, he pulled me into the Ships Club Cafe (?)
which was full of Barbershoppers tagging the ceiling off the place.
Now, I thought BBS was corny, outdated,out-of-tune and practiced by
Old Gezzers one flat away from enforce AA. That Guy was Roy Frisby
(lead of the Elastic Four-1942 International Champs and Society
Icons). I was vocally grilled with hand motioned Tags, by the rest of
the quartet and guys in the joint, listened to 3 hours of the
greatest sound outside of heaven. When I thought I would need throat
surgery-in walked the Chordetts from a gig! The rest of the story is
a wonderful night (very early Morning) of Harmony, Fellowship Sharing
and Just Plain FUN. That HIGH has stayed with me for the rest of my
life and, hopefully, many more. Incidentily, as I write this long "
Hooked On".. I am looking at a 2 record 33rpm album of the Elastic
Four-Hank Hedges (jr)
with an inscription that Reads---To Hank Hedges (Sr.) Our first
Baritone - signed by Roy M Frisby himself! Hank Hedges Jr.
- Am I the only guy who got hooked by three Barbershoppers asking me, a non
Barbershopper, to sing with them? That was the first thrill. The chorus
came later but was never close to that first intro of a Barbershop song.
