- OK - here's my "harmonet reporter light" news of the Labor Day Jamboree @ Tarpon Springs, FL
First off - WOW it's SO much fun, to sing songs and tags in a pool - that's fun! The society should sponsor a side contest that features a 4 person hot tub - stage presence would be limited to splashing each other with water, but that could be worked out in the long run. This would open the contest to people that like singing in the bathroom due to it's extended acoustics.
Tony DeRosa filled in on Tenor for 4 Voices our 2002 International Representative - apparently we'll have to talk to the original tenor about his level of commitment! I mean - really!!! Another thing, when he flew in for the Gas House Gang thing, he learned their repertoire on the plane, while he may have had a week to work out with the four voices. Maybe the Gas House Gang sings easier stuff... Since Tony is SUCH a good customer for the "Sing with the AIC champions" - why I'm going to form a Quartet, win the Gold Medal so I get to sing with Tony for a whole show! MAN - I'm going to make a MINT off that guy!! Like taking candy from a baby!!
Riptide sang their usual songs that start with a baritone post (a REAL DeRosa!), and ends 2 minutes later with a singer that actually turns plaid! Quite cool! When he turned around, the audience actually saw the Aqualung surgically attached to his back! You guys can't fool me!!! Remember to say HI to Beatnik @ Top Gun school!
Heatwave, and Swinglish mix were one of the many ladies groups that performed... OK - Swinglish mix - one from California, one from Fort Meyers, FL - one from Sweden and I forget where the fourth is from. If anyone is SEEING where I'm going with this - this ALONE should STOP the average chorus member that complains that the rehearsal hall is FOUR BLOCKS from their house, and want the hall moved 2 blocks closer!!!!! Good luck to the ladies performing @ internationals!!!!
Our local groups "Wise Guys" (Sunshine District 1998 champs) performed some awesome stuff!! I think we need to add some categories @ internationals - "Tallest" group would be for those guys! Most double digit shoe sizes on one Barbershop stage would be another! I wonder, if these guys win internationals, will they have the "Sing with the international champs" with those neat "riser" boxes so us SHORT people don't have to sing craning our necks TOO badly! I sang with the Tenor in the pool Saturday - and I think the "floating in the water thing" equalized the playing field... ya know - I had NO idea his hair was black!!
The Collegiate group, Fortissimo performed - THESE GUYS NEED TO BE WATCHED!! Ya know, with the college groups getting BETTER and better, is there anyway we can require one of the members to sing off key until they enter the society full time ... I love their youth! I remember as a lad, trying to sing with ANYONE willing to! Their energy, and drive is frankly refreshing!! WE NEED MORE OF THIS!!
Winter Park performed Friday Night... Nice Red jackets guys!!
Dave LeBar was the MC Saturday Night! For ANYONE wanting Dave to MC more, give him the MOST detailed script! Down to his entrances and exits! Inhales, and exhales! DETAILED!!! <he he he!>
The WHOLE weekend performances were dedicated to the life and time of Joe DeRosa - and the final song performed, was Basin Street Blues - with the Tampa Chorus, a recording of Joe DeRosa playing and Tony directing with a Clarinet with a single spotlight on it - which was extremely touching!
I get sad whenever ANY barbershoper dies. It means somewhere the music stopped. We can't let this happen guys! The music must go on! It's for everyone to love. Show the families that their lives were meaningful, and touched you!
Keep it harmony!
