Group Description

The origins of Barn Hunting to back to the days when itenerant Ratcatchers would travel to towns and farms, being paid to use their sharp and clever dogs to rid the area of rats and mice. These dogs were not necessarily go-to-ground dogs or earthdog breeds though Jack/Parson Russells and terrier crosses were common.

Modern barn hunts of one form or another have been held across the country as a fun event in conjunction with earthdog trials. But there has never been an official sanctioning organization or sport with rules. And often, non go-to-ground dogs have been excluded from participation.

The basics of Barn Hunt Association rules will include climbing over and under straw/hay bales in search of prey, marking prey, owner calling of mark, and placements based on time. Expenditure for clubs will be minimal. All rats will be handled responsibly and humanely. Any dog of any breed that can fit in an 18" gap/hole will be eligible to play the game. At a later date, a field component may be added as a titling event.

List members will help shape this new sport!
