Group Description

Banin-UK is the only known forum in the United Kingdom where people of Nso’ extraction (Nso’ or Won Nso – singular: wirnso’) meet on a monthly basis to collectively reflect and discuss issues of welfare and development both in the UK and back at home within the Nso’ tribe. The word banin is the Lamnso’ (the language of the Nso’ people) equivalent of harmony, being together or better still togetherness. No matter what interpretation is assigned to the word banin the element of unity is fundamental.

Geographical Context and Historical Perspective of the Nso’ Tribe

Geographical Location
The Nso’ Fondom which constitutes the major part of Bui Division is located in the highlands of the Southern (West) Cameroon and is undoubtedly the biggest tribe in the North West Province. The Nso’ tribe occupies the south western arm of the Adamawa plateau and lies between latitudes 5 60 and 6 25 to the north and longitude 10 20 and 11 5 to the East. Its relief is mostly hilly punctuated by deep valleys and gorges. According to the 1987 population estimates in Cameroon the Nso’ tribe has a population of 300.000 resident people and a further 700.000 scattered all over Cameroon mostly in the major towns and cities, pockets of Nso’ people are in many parts of Nigeria. It must be stressed that Nso’ is a recognised tribe in the Adamawa state (formerly Gongola state) of Nigeria and falls under the Sarduna Local Government Area. A reasonable number of Nso’ people can also be found in Europe and North America.
The Nso’ people are very proud of their language and culture. This structured society groups lineages into clans which in turn are represented in the councils of one paramount leader the Fon whose authority is abetted and monitored by Nwerong the regulatory organ of the land.
