This new full time post is available from 1 September 2009 on a fixed
term basis until 31 August 2012.
Following the grant of a Leverhulme Trust Research Leadership Award to
Professor Gareth Stansfield, the School of Humanities and Social
Sciences is pleased to advertise a post-doctoral research position in
the field of ‘Ethnopolitics'. The position is an important element in
the building of a research cluster in Exeter, bringing together
academics from a range of Schools into the multi-disciplinary ‘Exeter
Centre for Ethno-Political Studies' (EXCEPS).
The aim of EXCEPS is to promote the inter-disciplinary study of
‘Ethnopolitics' by academics from disciplines including, but not limited
to, Political Science (both quantitative and qualitative approaches),
Sociology, Psychology, Geography, Area Studies, Language and Literature.
We are particularly keen to receive applications from applicants with
interests in the comparative study of conflict resolution in divided
societies with a view to working on a project that compares the
situation in Palestine/Israel with others that have been successfully
Other possible areas of interest would be (a) quantitative modeling of
conflict, (b) gender issues in conflict environments, (c) group identity
construction, (d) approaches to ethno-political conflict management and
regulation, (e) ethno-politics in urban environments, and (f) particular
‘area' based studies (e.g. Middle East, Africa, Caucasus).
The successful applicants will be expected to integrate fully into the
activities of EXCEPS, and their host department, and contribute to
promoting the new centre's activities globally.
