                    Following Yugoslavia ’s anti-Milosevic „revolution “,optimists
expected that the new government in Belgrade will be quickly
established as a liberal-democratic state. But the political system
remains dysfunctional. The political debate about the co- operation
with the International War Crimes Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia
(in The Hague)is controversial.Meanwhile, separatist questions in
Montenegro and Kosovo remain unresolved, while autonomist tendencies
in Vojvodina and in the Sandzak continue to grow. The West has
withdrawn its support for Montenegro and encouraged hopes in Serbia
that Kosovo will be gradually reintegrated into Yu- goslavia. But the
Albanians of Kosovo are unanimous in calling for full independence.
These elements add up to a picture in which the policy of the West
seems ill-suited for its genuinelong-term objectives.

Organizers of the VIII Sarajevo Film Festival (August 16-24, Sarajevo,
Bosnia and Herzegovina) decided after holding only two press conferences to
terminate this kind of contact with journalists. The real reason why press
conferences were terminated is that journalists who attended them asked few
                          questions.

IDENTITY (ON 'ALEM' - BOSNIAN LANGUAGE MAGASINE PUBLISHED IN PRIŠTINA)
The first issue of 'Alem', the Bosnian language independent Kosovo
magasine, was published on the 2nd of March 2001 in Priština. The editorial
orientation of this magasine is primarily focused on the autochtony of
Bosniaks and any information thereof in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Diaspora, their political,
economically-social and educationally-cultural position and performance, as
well as relations between Bosniaks and other ethnic groups in Kosovo and
their relations with the authorities and the international peace-keeping
mission. Predecessors of Alem were 'Kosovo Avaz' and 'Selam' - the media
attempts of self-recognition by Kosovo Bosniaks.

TEMPERED: NO ONE IS COMPLETELY SATISFIED
The red-hot arena where the new Law on Broadcasting in Serbia was being
forged attracted politicians in a pack, who were carefully watching the
development of media, in particular television, and trying to assess their
own position and that of their political party in the newly-arise
situation. Most anger on the part of media people was provoked by New
Democracy (the party president is Police Minister Dusan Mihajlovic), which
requested the Broadcasting Council to be run by the state through the
procedure of appointing the Council members.
