ATHENS, Greece - Greece said Sunday it would make a formal complaint to
Turkish authorities after a group of illegal immigrants were left stranded
in the Aegean Sea.
The merchant marine ministry said 23 people in a small wooden boat were
stranded in Turkish waters shortly after leaving the Turkish coast for the
nearby Greek island of Chios.
The Turkish coast guard refused to pick the immigrants up and they were
eventually taken to Chios after drifting into Greek waters, the ministry said.
Their nationalities were not immediately known.
The route is used daily by people smugglers, who illegally transport people
from Iraq, Afghanistan ( news - web sites) and a variety of other countries
Thousands of migrants, mostly from Asia and the Middle East, pass through
Turkey each year on their way to European Union ( news - web sites) countries.
Last year, Greece and Turkey signed an agreement allowing Greek authorities
to send back illegal immigrants originating from Turkey.
