      Hello From The BAHL Office!

A fairly quiet week at the arena!  This weekend will be quiet as well – public skate is scheduled for Saturday only 12:30-2:30 pm.  We will be closed tomorrow and Sunday for the holiday.  There are just a few weeks of ice left – come out to a drop-in session or two to be ready for Big Sky State Games!  Drop-in schedule is on the youth hockey page of our website.

Entry deadline for Big Sky State Games has been extended – more high school and adult teams are needed but all age divisions will accept additional entries.

      Gun Raffle:

Sales are picking up steam for our Gun Raffle!  Please don’t forget about the tickets you have – if they are sold, please turn them in to the arena.  If they are not sold yet, please continue to work at selling them and have them turned in to the arena before our drawing on April 28th.  All tickets must be accounted for so unsold tickets need to be returned.

      Casino Night:

We are very excited for this year’s Casino Night!  April 28th is our date.  Please plan to attend and pre-register at our website.  If you pre-register for Poker, you save the entry fee ($25.00 savings).  The Marketing Committee is still working to confirm donations for our silent auction.  If you have a donation or know someone who has a donation, please contact me.

      Annual Meeting:

Next Tuesday is the BAHL Annual Meeting and Board Member elections.  Every BAHL skater has one vote through his/her parent/guardian.  Only those in attendance at this meeting will have a chance to win the grand prize drawing of half-off fees for next season or door prizes!  Meeting will be held April 10th at 6:30 pm at the Mansfield Center.  Below is some information on those nominated for election – three positions will be filled:

James Forsyth:  James and his wife, Chantelle, have two kids skating in the BAHL, a Mite and a Squirt.  James has been part of the BAHL for three seasons, helping coach in the Mites and Squirts.  Growing up playing hockey (not very well says James) he is excited about the program and helping it grow for his kids and the community.  James states that his greatest asset he will bring to the board is putting the health of the program first.  He would like to see more flexibility in decisions – if there is a lot of interest in travel at a certain age group then let them travel or make exceptions to allow players to play up or down in special circumstances.  His vision for the BAHL is one where there is greatly expanded membership so we can have a house program in addition to the travel program.  James says he would see to it that everyone in Billings knows there is a hockey program in town.

Jason Hertz:  With a Mite and a Squirt in the BAHL, Jason and his wife Krista have been part of the BAHL for five seasons.  Jason is currently serving as an active member of the Strategic Planning Committee.  Jason says his experience as a business owner will benefit him as a board member:  “As a business owner, I need to make staffing decisions, understand the costs of operating a business, and how to successfully work with others.  The nature of my business is customer service and I feel this will assist me in serving on the board and working with the BAHL membership to grow youth hockey programs and continue to improve the operational side of the arena.  From my experience as a coach for my sons’ baseball teams, I will be able to understand and assist with questions that arise from coaches, age group managers, and parents.  Over the last few months I have been involved with the BAHL’s Strategic Planning Committee and have spent a great deal of time learning about the operational side of the hockey rink and what will need to continue to operate and grow the programs.”  Jason believes we have a great opportunity to provide and activity for kids and families in our community to take part in.  “The BAHL needs to be proactive in growing its membership and marketing to the community the opportunities and benefits of a youth hockey program.  The BAHL needs to continue to look at the longevity of our current rink and set a priority to revamp the current rink or construct a new facility.”

Kristi Knutson:  Kristi has been a part of the BAHL for 8 years.  Kristi and her husband, Brian, have three sons with our youngest Spenser currently playing hockey on the Varsity team.  He started out with the learn-to-skate program when he was 4.  Our oldest son Shelby also did learn to play hockey and played one year of house hockey.  Having three sons has exposed the Knutson family to a lot of different sports over the years.  Some of these also ran from clubs or associations.  Kristi has been a team manager at the Squirt, Peewee and U16 level.  Experience at all of these levels within the league and outside has given Kristi the opportunity to observe hockey, the individual associations and how they all work together.  She has met and corresponded with so many people from other leagues within MAHA and outside which she believes would help bring a different perspective.   Kristi:  “We love the sport of hockey!  I want to support the BAHL and the membership.  Working together we can succeed and grow the sport of youth hockey in our community.”

Connie Murphree:  Connie and her husband, Mike, have one skater in the Peewee division.  Their oldest son also skated with the BAHL in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s so Connie has been around this league for a while!  Connie has served as an Age Group Director and Team Manager during several different seasons and has always tried to do her part to ensure the success of the BAHL so the kids could enjoy the best season possible.  Connie is also an active member of the Marketing Committee this season helping with our various fundraising activities.  With a degree in Administration and over 20 years experience in accounting, many as management Connie feels she can bring her business and past league experience as a positive, hard-working addition to the BAHL Board.  Connie is committed to maintaining and bettering the League for the benefit of all skaters and age groups.

Dan Stremcha:  Dan has been a mainstay at the BAHL since 1996 when he started coaching the Learn to Play program and has continued his involvement with the league as a coach, past board member for 7 seasons, served on the equipment, coaches and discipline committees over the seasons and helping out whenever asked.  Dan and his wife Marla have two boys which have both been active BAHL skaters.  Their oldest skated with the Varsity team this season and their youngest decided after some time out of hockey to become an official this season.  Dan believes his long history with the BAHL in a variety of positions would be beneficial to the BAHL Board and is excited to do what he can to help grow our program.

Dr. Giselle Tan:  Dr. Tan started out playing roller hockey after college.  Fully enjoying this new experience, she joined a women’s roller hockey team playing for a few seasons with them.  After switching to ice hockey she had a blast and “hasn’t looked back since”.  Giselle has played in numerous leagues including Los Angeles, Michigan and Germany where she had the opportunity to play a season of semi-pro hockey.  Currently a Billings adult hockey member, she says hockey is a great stress reliever as well as a fun way to get a great workout.  Dr. Tan believes that the BAHL should afford the hockey experience to everyone in the community, both children and adults.  She feels the best way to do this is to involve everyone in the game, regardless of ability level.  Dr. Tan:  “I think that once you get someone out on the ice, and that someone experiences the sheer joy of playing hockey, that is a person who will support the rink and their love of the game will continue to propel hockey in the community.”
