Neural-Network Technology Moves into the Mainstream
And Here's the Local Crime Forecast...
Wilpen Gorr, who is an expert on information systems and
forecasting and heads the team, used a neural network to
make connections that link changes in the pattern of these
minor offences with changes in levels of more serious
crimes. He found that if a minor crime such as vandalism
increases during one month, it can indicate that there will
be an increase in serious property crimes such as burglary
in the following month.
By recognising both visual and audio cues, the self-aiming
camera can even tell the difference between an airplane and
an albatross. The system, which could find use as an
intelligent sentinel in sensitive military applications,
was originally built to demonstrate the versatility of a
simulated neural network, which the researchers modelled
after the part of the human brain.
Researchers at the University of Illinois have built a
movable video camera that is aimed at targets detected by a
stationary video camera that watches for motion, and a
microphone pair that listens for sound.

The Ghost in Your Machine
Computers may soon monitor your work, notice when fatigue
sets in, and fix mistakes. Scary? No more than a good
