I have been backpacking for 7 years. Most of my trips are 2-3 days, but I get out for longer if I can. I consider myself a lightweight backpacker. Most of my backpacking has been in the mountains of Colorado and the deserts of the southwestern US. Most of my backpacking takes place during the spring, summer, and fall, but I'm getting more and more interested in winter/ski camping. In addition to backpacking, I also participate in rock climbing, backcountry skiing, road and mountain biking, and whitewater rafting.
I will use the MontBell U.L. Tec Down Jacket on all of my backcountry skiing trips. I always keep some type of insulation layer in my pack for longer rest breaks on the ascent, refueling on the summit, and the powder harvesting on the descent. I get much too warm to wear an insulated layer while skinning up the mountain. I would expect to use this pack at least twice a week from late November (sooner if the early snow continues in the high country) through the end of the test period. My friends and I head out on dawn patrol several times each week. This involves waking up at 4:30 am, driving an hour to the trailhead, skinning up a peak and skiing for a couple hours, and returning to work by 10 am.
I'm hoping to get in at least one overnight backcountry ski trip per month this winter. These could vary from skiing to backcountry huts where an insulated jacket is need to bring in more firewood to tent camping where an insulated jacket is required to keep me alive and happy. In addition to the backcountry use, the jacket will also see plenty of use around town. I almost always need a layer when heading to and from work as well as normal in-town excursions.
