APPLICATION TO TEST THE BUSHNELL BACKTRACK GPS PERSONAL LOCATION FINDER
Please accept my application to test the Bushnell BackTrack GPS Personal Location Finder. I have read the requirements for being a tester and the reporting requirements and I AGREE to comply. I am familiar with the BGT Survival Guide v.0609, including Chapters 4 & 5 and my Tester Agreement is on file. I am a 5-year veteran who participates in BGT as an editor, test monitor and mentor.

My husband and I started hiking in 1998 after an eye-opening climb up Hahn's Peak near Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Hooked, we returned to Colorado often and in 2006 purchased 35 acres of land with the intent to relocate there as soon as we can. For now, we trip back and forth between White Lake, Michigan and Canon City, Colorado; spending most of our time in Colorado.
Here in Colorado, I have ample opportunities to backpack with acres and acres of BLM land right outside my "backyard" in addition to all the other gorgeous locations which abound in Colorado.
In the past, John and I have also had the good fortune to hike/snowshoe glaciers, rain forests, mountains and deserts in domestic and exotic locations, including Iceland, Costa Rica, Slovenia and Death Valley.
My hiking style is comfortable, aiming for lightweight. Current pack averages 25 lb (11 kg) excluding food and water.
While I doubt the BackTrack would ship in time to be tested there, during the last 3 weeks of August I will be in Michigan where generally I will be confined to day hikes - except for 4 days on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. After that I will be back in Colorado for most of the next 4 months. There I have various day and overnight hikes/backpacks planned for both desert and high alpine destinations, including Estes Park, Durango/Silverton and the Great Sand Dunes National Park. And of course, lots of spontaneous tramping around my "backyard".
In early October I will be spending a week hiking in various locations between Mesquite, Nevada and Bryce Canyon in Utah. Tentatively, very tentatively, I'm campaigning for a Thanksgiving weekend at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Christmas holidays are traditionally spent snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park.
Elevation in the western states will range from 5000 ft up to 14,000 ft (1500 m to 4000 m). Temperatures over the remaining summer, fall and early winter will vary from an average of 36 F to 88 F (2 C to 31 C). Michigan weather will be similar but at much lower elevations and more humidity.
I get turned around and directionally-confused very easily. You should have seen me in the Salt Lake Palace (OR Show convention center)! I certainly could have used one of these babies there.
I don't generally like to use a GPS when hiking. (Besides, getting ours away from my husband is downright impossible anyway!) The simplicity of the BackTrack with its limited functionality really appeals to me.
I was lucky enough to check out the Bushnell BackTrack at the OR Show in Salt Lake City during the Open Air Demo. The vendor had the BackTrack preset for a waypoint and after a one-minute instruction, I was sent off. In that limited setting, the BackTrack was easy enough to follow, but I didn't have much time and I didn't actually "work with" it.
I'd love to give the BackTrack a thorough going over to see how easy it is to set-up and use in the field. Of course, accuracy and usefulness would be my major points to determine and then there is durability - I'm clumsy, too.
I will also report any issues that arise during the testing period.
I am very excited about BGT and aim to do my best and a thorough job of testing for all manufacturers. I am detail oriented in my evaluations and prompt with my reports.
I currently am testing only two items and have tested up to 7 items at one time, so I will have ample time and energy to evaluate this item. It would be an honor and a pleasure to test the Bushnell BackTrack.
Thank you to BGT and Bushnell for the opportunity to apply to test such a neat product!
