In this time of global unrest, VOCI Women's Choral Ensemble invites audiences to share the healing power of music and, at the same time, to support the Global Fund for Womens extraordinary efforts on behalf of womens human rights, including those of Afghan women. VOCI presents "Voices in Peace," a holiday benefit concert and reception for the Global Fund for Women. "Voices in Peace" explores the meaning of peace in many different cultural and musical traditions. The program includes a preview of a work in progress by Oakland composer Nina Egert, "A Promise for the Future," written for VOCI based on a text by 14th century Tibetan visionary Rigdzin Godem. The program also features Bob Chilcott's transcendent "Peace Mass," Felix Mendelssohn's passionate "Veni Domine," a selection of carols, Hebrew peace chants, and seasonal Renaissance motets. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Global Fund for Women, a nonprofit foundation that defends and advances womens human rights by making grants to seed, strengthen and support womens rights groups around the world.
Since 1987, the Global Fund for Women has granted $21 million to over 1,800 women's groups in more than 157 countries, improving women's health and reproductive rights; engaging in peace-building and conflict resolution efforts; challenging harmful traditional practices; increasing women's economic independence; expanding girls' access to education; ensuring disabled women's rights; and strengthening women's political participation.
Afghan womens organizations are one focus of the Global Funds efforts. Since 1990, The Global Fund has awarded nearly $450,000 to women's groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the majority of which address womens economic security and access to basic education.
VOCI Womens Choral Ensemble, now in its 11th season, is recognized as one of the finest choral groups in the Bay Area. Its commitment to musical excellence, unique mastery of style and technique, and adventurous and innovative programming has earned VOCI high praise from critics and choral musicians alike. As a central part of its mission, VOCI champions music by women and for women by commissioning new works by contemporary composers, especially women composers from the San Francisco Bay Area. Led by artistic director Jude Navari, who is active throughout the Bay Area as a conductor and composer, VOCI has been described as having a particularly lush and ethereal quality. The groups size of 20 voices conveys a poignant intimacy and allows for a deep, personal connection among chorus members and between chorus and audience.
VOCI is a dynamic, diverse group of women of all ages and walks of life who share a passionate love of music, fierce dedication to the ensemble, and deep commitment to giving back to the community. VOCI has given benefit performances for the Oakland firestorm victims and the Faithful Fools Street Ministry of San Francisco. Join us as the warmth and serene tonal beauty of VOCIs music creates a community of spirit and harmony for the holiday season.

Supported in part by grants from the Alameda County Art Commission and The California Arts Council.
