On Saturday, August 19, and Sunday, August 20, Santa Cruz hosts the
Northern California Regional Shape Note Singing, attracting singers from
      all over the state.

Shape Note Singing School will be taught on Saturday, August 19, from 3-5
PM in Holy Cross Choir Room, room 101 in the Old High School at Holy Cross
Church in Santa Cruz. It's easy and fun, the music is great and beginners
are very welcome. $5.00 will be collected at the door.

At 8 PM on Saturday, August 19, celebrate with the Santa Cruz Shape Note
Society as they release their exercise tape. Shape up with Shape Notes!
Donations will be accepted and tapes will be for sale. The album release
concert takes place at the Holy Cross Adobe Mission next to Holy Cross
      Church.

A traditional singing, with a potluck "dinner on the grounds", will be held
the next day on Sunday, August 20 from 9 AM - 3 PM at Senior Citizens'
Opportunities, 222 Market St. in Santa Cruz. This event is free and open
to children. Loaner books will be available. Locals please bring a dish
      to share.

Shape Note Singing is an early American music form with roots in the Celtic
song tradition that is undergoing a national revival. Songs are taken from
the 1991 edition of the Sacred Harp, which includes songs from the colonial
times to the present. The notes in the book are of different shapes
according to the pitches they represent, as an aid to sight-singing in
harmony. The Santa Cruz Shape Note Society holds sings every 1st and 3rd
Tuesday evenings from 7:30 - 9:00 PM. No experience is necessary. Call
      ahead to confirm location.
For more information call Shelley Phillips at 426-9155.
