      -- Oakland Tribune
(OAKLAND, CA) - From the SOul to the VOice to the SOng...Oakland's Arts
Festival 2000 at the Alice presents the widely acclaimed vocal ensemble
SoVoSo on Saturday, April 8, 8:00 p.m. SoVoSo sings a compelling mix of

jazz, R&B, world, pop, gospel and improvisational music. Known for
their innovative compositions and arrangements, intricate rhythms and
imaginative improvisations, the Bay Area-based sextet claimed the 1999
Isadora Duncan "Best Score" Award for their "Mother May I" collaboration

with the Robert Moses' dance troupe. This culturally diverse and
close-knit ensemble also achieved top honors on the contemporary
a cappella scene, winning "First Prize" and "Audience Favorite" at the
National Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival. The group has
appeared at major festivals and venues, including the renowned Monterey
Jazz Festival, New York's Bottom Line and the Bay Area's own Stern Grove

Midsummer Music Festival. SoVoSo: World Jazz A Cappella CD (Primarily

A Cappella, 1997) was awarded "Best Studio Album" by the Contemporary A
Cappella Recording Awards, with their second CD Truth and Other Stories
receiving a 1999 "Best Jazz Album" CARA nomination. Several SoVoSo
members are alumni of Bobby McFerrin's a cappella group Voicestra which
he originated during his Bay Area days.

sponsored by the City of Oakland Department of Craft and Cultural Arts
