ONE YEAR OF URBAN HARMONY (Phase II)!
SAN FRANCISCO AND SOUTH BAY
Happy Anniversary to our San Francisco and South Bay adult choruses!
Our San Francisco group, "San Francisco Harmony", celebrated its first
year by hosting a performance exchange with the Duke University
Pitchforks, who were on tour from North Carolina. A great time was had
Currently, we've got three adult choruses up and running in the Bay Area
- in Oakland (East Bay), San Francisco, and Los Altos (South Bay).
Congratulations and gratitude go to Eric Liwanag, our SF music director
and Paul Prochaska, our South Bay music director, who have navigated
our choruses through their first year. They've done a marvelous job
and everyone is looking forward to singing with them another year.
EAST BAY HARMONY
A Big Thank You also goes to DJ Hamouris, our East Bay Harmony music
director, for all of her fine work, above and beyond the call of duty.
DJ has the distinction of leading our largest Urban Harmony chorus (up
to 30 members in only 4 months!) and the group with the most
performances so far.
SANTA CRUZ ACAPPELLAFEST
Members East Bay Harmony and South Bay Harmony were recently featured at
the 3rd annual Santa Cruz Acappellafest, serving as leaders and
performers for the event's singalong.
This event promoted the start of Santa Cruzs own community
a cappella chorus. All of our voices rang in wall of sound our largest
gathering of singers yet.
All of our choruses are sounding great, so great that we'll be recording
all three adult choruses together in May. This recording will be used
in our promotion of the program, through the media and otherwise.
We'll be forming a fourth adult chorus in Marin County within the next
two months, directed by Ed Cohn of the professional a cappella group,
the Edlos. We're so fortunate to have such a distinguished member of
the a cappella world joining Urban Harmony. Look for an announcement at
the Harmony Sweepstakes Finals (May 6th) for the beginning of this
exciting group. Currently, we're in hot pursuit of this group's home
(rehearsal space), so if you have any good ideas or leads, by all means
URBAN HARMONY YOUTH CHORUSES
We're still working on a formula for successfully starting our youth
choruses. Currently, we're focusing on strategies to get a teen chorus
started in the Oakland-Berkeley area and one in San Jose and hope to
have them singing by summer. We've got two wonderful music directors,
Mark Bernfield and Charlotte Rubio, to lead these groups.
NEW VOLUNTEERS for BUSINESS & PUBLICITY
The other key volunteer position to creating an Urban Harmony group is
the Business and Publicity Manager. The main duties of this position are
recruitment of singers, promotion of the UH group through publicity and
setting up community performances for the group. An effective Publicity
& Business Manager helps to create a positive and dynamic profile for
Urban Harmony and provide the UH group opportunities to spread its
harmony community-wide through membership and performance.
Welcome to our newest Urban Harmony staff members, Business and
Publicity Managers, Barbara Sampson of East Bay Harmony, and Susan
Kimberlin (South Bay All-Stars)! These able and enthusiastic volunteers
are an essential part of developing our choruses. We are so grateful
for their help!
URBAN HARMONY - NATIONAL PROGRAMS
In addition to our Bay Area pilot program, we've got some satellite
Urban Harmony groups starting outside the Bay Area. These groups are
key for helping us plan our expansion of Urban Harmony to the national
level. Our gratitude goes to Stephanie R. McNeal in Philadelphia,
Lindsay Whitman in Boston and Brock Harris in Los Angeles. They are our
courageous and dedicated volunteer coordinators in these areas who are
patiently working with us to create a national formula for community a
URBAN HARMONY START-UP KIT
On that note, we are well on our way to creating the Urban Harmony
Start-Up Kit, full of advice, teaching materials, music and Urban
Harmony guidelines to get a group up and singing anywhere! As well, we
will soon have available a similar outreach packet to offer to outside
groups and schools who have expressed interest in using Urban Harmony
music and materials.
It's very exciting to see the growth of the program thus far, but the
real reward is hearing and seeing our Urban Harmony choruses members
sing together, sharing and spreading harmony and community.
